i posted this to the shintolin forum, but seeing as war is becoming more and more common these days i thought id start up a thread about preparedness for war, because we can be certain we wont always be so lucky as to be uninvolved. war is of course always the last option, if things can be solved peacefully then do so. there is no need to expend our resources to go hurt someone for any reason that could be avoided.
if you have more advice to give then add to this thread.
it is wise to prepare for war. lean to handle an axe, if thyme is plentiful strike a friend and heal them, this gives you warrior XP and herbalist XP, both of which are needed in war.
it is best to catch enemies off guard. if you are weak make it appear that you are strong, if you are strong then appear as if you are weak. as soon as they attack you you will retaliate, give them no time to breathe.
loot. if they expect you to be nice and leave their supplies untouched then they shouldn't have attacked you in the first place. take all you can from their stockpiles to hidden stockpiles you build away from your town where it seems safe, as our own stockpiles may come into attack after we do so. when their stockpiles contain nothing more you or your allies need or can use then destroy them. they will have to spend time to rebuild and resupply just to feed their village, which means they wont have time to attack you. the same goes for hospitals and workshops, take them out if you can as it will hinder their efforts.
Allies.
even tho i do not like making alliances or mutual defense pacts, during conflicts you can make allies. i never agreed with an alliance for no good reason to help another, but under certain situations its possible to be swayed. what i would offer my allies is what i would want from them.
if there were a conflict which needed allies one would go to another leader, and make him an offer. you vow to protect his village from the your enemies as you would your own, and continue to do so until the conflict is ended for the both of you. this is not a show of trust, nothing good is ever for free. if you need allies you offer them payment, plunder, or your enemies land should they help you.
i'll add more to this later, feel free to comment.

rules are for the civilized, but no war was ever civilized. rules for war are for those that underestimate the ruthlessness or honor of their enemies. if you make rules keep them in those lines.
my rules for war.
1. honor: assume you enemy has none.
2. ruthlessness: assume your enemy eats babies.
3. quarter: give them none.
4. peace: when they surrender, accept it, and aid their recovery.
